"Pico is the most beautiful and extraordinary Island of the Azores. It has a beauty of its own, a delightful colour and a strange power of attraction. " (Raul Brandão in As Ilhas desconhecidas [The unknown islands], 1924)
From all the Azores Islands the Pico Island has always been a reference throughout the times. Firstly, as an beacon for sailors, then described and admired by writers and poets and today it stands for a place where you can find beautiful nature sites and good quality rural tourism houses.
LAND
Pico has an area of 447 Km2 and it is the second largest of the Azores Islands. Its imposing mountain of 2351 meters high is the highest point in Portugal and its peek is a privileged place to contemplate the five Islands of the central group.
35% of the surface of the Island is classified as being a Natural Park, which contributes to the preservation of its cultural and natural values, namely its rich “laurissilva” forest. In fact, there are numerous endemic plants to the Azores which we can find in their natural habitat, and which make this last haven of preserved flora, a potential place for study sites and a never ending discovery experience for visitors.
SEA
It is in the heart of a large sea area that we can find the Pico Island, one of the nine islands of the Azores. Only a two hour trip away from the European Continent, this island offers a wide range of diving sites and a rich and abundant sea life.
Its location in the heart of the North Atlantic, the clear waters of a unique color and its mild temperatures all year round, makes it an oasis for marine biodiversity. A place where you can find more than twenty-four species of cetaceans, five species of turtles and more than six hundred species of fish, is definitely the ideal holiday destination for diving lovers.
Across its coastline and shallow areas, numerous caves can be seen, huge arcades, hot springs and other lava formations. In a medium and long distance from the shore there are underwater lower and upper levels which are the habitat of schools of pelagic fish, manta rays and some cetaceans.
The water temperature presents an average variation of just 6ºC, ranging from 16ºC to 22ºC, with peeks of 24ºC/25ºC degrees maximum.
The best time of the year for diving goes from May to October.
MISSION
Sustainable tourism has gained a growing relevance in the last years, as a result of the need for an alternative tourism. The number of places offering this new concept of tourism has been multiplying around the world and the Azores are, without the shadow of a doubt, the ideal place for it.According to the World Tourism Organization, developing tourism in a sustainable way implies fair social actions, economical viability and ecological correctness.
OKEANO intends to follow this concept, providing quality touristic services based on environmental, social and enterprising principals.
OBJECTIVES
Developing projects and studies which may allow a better knowledge of the endemic species of the Azores. The goal is to develop a type of scientific tourism, in which the visitors are invited to interact - when combined they become the perfect framework for our mission.Creating tools which allow us to transmit our knowledge to the community, namely schools and the people involved in the activities developed by OKEANO.
Developing and implementing quality touristic products and services which allow the visitor to live enriching experiences, where the major goals are knowledge, ecological awareness and respect towards our natural resources.
